Writers Strike Forces Delays To Avengers And Avatar Among Others

Due to the ongoing writers’ strike, the development and shooting schedules of numerous films in Hollywood have been greatly affected, leading Disney to announce significant changes to the release dates of various Marvel films, not to mention also to Avatar, and other movies.

Marvel Studios, in particular, has experienced delays in the production of some of its films, resulting in a ripple effect throughout the interconnected cinematic universe. Captain America: Brave New World, originally slated for a May 2024 release, will now hit theaters on August 26 next year. Consequently, Thunderbolts will be pushed to December 20, 2024, Blade to February 14, 2025, and Fantastic Four to May 2, 2025.

This sequence of rescheduling further necessitates a one-year delay for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which will now premiere on May 1, 2026, taking over the release date originally assigned to its successor, Avengers: Secret Wars. The latter film has been moved to May 7, 2027.

Fans eagerly awaiting the next instalments in the Avatar franchise, who are already familiar with the waiting game, will face even more testing times. Avatar 3 has been shifted to December 19, 2025, Avatar 4 to December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 all the way to December 19, 2031. This means that the seemingly final movie in the series will arrive a staggering 22 years after the release of the original film in 2009.

However, it’s not all bad news. Deadpool 3, currently in production, will now grace the screens earlier than initially planned, moving up from its original date of November 8, 2024, to May 3 of the same year.

For Star Wars enthusiasts wondering when the next film from the franchise will emerge, there is good news. In 2026, Lucasfilm is set to release two movies, one on May 22 and another on the more traditional December 18 of that year. Additionally, a third film is reportedly scheduled for December 17, 2025. While Disney has not provided specific details regarding these projects, it is presumed that one of them will be the sequel to Rey’s story, starring Daisy Ridley, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as the director. This particular project was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration. Based on this information, it is also reasonable to speculate that Dave Filoni’s film and possibly James Mangold’s project might occupy the remaining two slots.

Furthermore, several films that previously lacked release dates now have their spots on the calendar. The live-action adaptation of Moana is slated to debut on June 27, 2025, while Fede Álvarez’s film set in the Alien universe is scheduled for August 16 of the following year. The espionage thriller The Amateur, featuring Rami Malek, is set to hit theatres in November of next year.
