In news that should surprise no one, the John Wick series continues to thrive, despite the uncertain fate of its eponymous protagonist at the end of the latest film. Director Chad Stahelski had hinted at the series’ continuation in a conversation with Collider, and now Lionsgate has officially confirmed it, as reported by Total Film.
Earlier this year, John Wick: Chapter 4 stormed into theatres, captivating audiences and shattering the franchise’s previous box office records with an electrifying spectacle of action, violence, and emotional release. Keanu Reeves’ Wick embarked on a worldwide quest for vengeance, determined to sever ties with the High Table. Given the immense financial success of the movie, it comes as no surprise that Lionsgate is not yet ready to let go of their lucrative asset.
During Lionsgate’s Q4 2023 earnings call, Joe Drake, the chairman of the Motion Picture Group, unequivocally announced that a fifth John Wick film is currently in the early stages of development. Additionally, Drake revealed plans to expand the John Wick universe through spin-offs, more television series, and video games, further capitalizing on the beloved Wick intellectual property.
“We’re now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there’s clear appetite by the audience. What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We’re in development on three others, including John Wick 5 and including television series. The Continental will be airing soon. And so, we’re building out the world and when that five movie comes, will be organic — will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”
At last year’s CCXP event in São Paulo, Brazil, Keanu Reeves dropped a hint about the upcoming film Ballerina, revealing that it takes place between the events of John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum and Chapter 4. Recently, director Chad Stahelski confirmed to us that the story of Ballerina unfolds within that six-month timeframe. Excitingly, Reeves will not only make a cameo appearance but will reprise his role as John Wick in a substantial capacity. Joining him are his fellow John Wick stars Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick, ensuring a seamless integration and preserving the essential synergy that will make Ballerina feel like an authentic part of the Wick universe.
The next venture in the John Wick universe is The Continental series, which is scheduled to premiere on Peacock in September of this year. As for Ballerina, fans can mark their calendars for June 7, 2024, when the film is set to hit theatres.
